HPCSA: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS AS A MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE FOR MEDICAL SCIENCE OF THE MEDICAL AND DENTAL PROFESSIONS BOARD

The Committee for Medical Science within the Medical and Dental Professions Board currently has an open position for a Medical Biological Scientist specializing in Haematology. Candidates with specific experience or dual registration in Molecular Biology will be given priority.

Committee Mandate and Terms of Reference

The Committee for Medical Science, approved by the Medical and Dental Board, operates under the following mandates:

Recommendations to the Board:

  1. Policies and Guidelines
    • Evaluation and accreditation of internship training programs and facilities for Medical Science.
  2. Criteria for Education and Training Equivalence
    • Determine equivalence for education completed outside of South Africa.
  3. Qualification Recognition
    • Policies for recognition of qualifications not prescribed for registration.
  4. Postgraduate Education Recognition
    • Policies for the recognition of additional postgraduate qualifications.
  5. Registration and Restoration Policies
    • Guidelines for Medical Scientists.
  6. Education and Training Program Regulation
    • Develop policies for regulatory standards.
  7. Competency-based Examination Assessment
    • Policies for the National Board Competency-based Examination (Portfolio of Evidence).

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to Board strategies in education, training, and registration matters.

Committee Authorization

The Committee for Medical Science holds the authority to:

  • Appoint evaluators for education and training as per Board criteria.
  • Approve accreditation reports.
  • Approve non-standard qualifications for registration.
  • Determine equivalence of academic qualifications and internship training.

Selection Process

The Committee of Medical Sciences and the Medical and Dental Professions Board will review the CVs of nominated Medical Biological Scientists. Experience with Portfolio of Evidence evaluations, training facility evaluations, and supervisory roles in training programs will be considered an advantage.
