Dr Deborah Vaz

Deborah Vaz is a Haematopathologist with experience as a consultant at NHLS and UP since 2021. She provides diagnostic services, manages a haematology clinic at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, and is actively involved in teaching and research supervision. Deborah is currently pursuing a PhD at the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM) at the University of Pretoria, holds a FC(Path) in Haematology from the College of Medicine SA and an MMed from UP (2021) as well as a MBBCh from Wits (2008).

She has completed various additional courses, including a Histopathology Bone Marrow Course at the Imperial College of London (2023). Her research has been published in the South African Medical Journal and the Journal of Medical Science, and she has submitted various poster presentations at such conferences as PATHRED and ISLH.

She serves on multiple committees including the ISLH (Molecular analysis committee), the BloodSA Aplastic Anaemia WP and the PBM committee at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. She has also made media appearances on SABC News and SAFM, discussing topics related to World Blood Donor Day and Sickle Cell Anaemia, and has contributed articles to the University of Pretoria’s digital newsletter.
