Dr Michael Cass

Position: Michael Cass is a clinical haematologist and stem cell transplant physician at the Haemalife Unit based at Netcare Kuilsriver Hospital in the Western Cape.
He completed his undergraduate medical training as well as postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Clinical Haematology at the University of Stellenbosch and Tygerberg Hospital. He performed internship and community service at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Prior to returning to Tygerberg for specialist training he worked at Paarl Hospital in the Department of Internal Medicine. On completion of his training as a haematologist he joined the Alberts Cellular Therapy Unit in Pretoria in 2016. He joined the Haemalife Unit in 2021.

Academic Interests: While working and training at Tygerberg Hospital he conducted research on the microbiological profile and outcomes of patients with neutropenic fever and subsequently Hodgkin lymphoma and HIV.
He has a broad interest in haematological oncology and a particular interest in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and multiple myeloma. He is involved in clinical trials and is passionate about the opportunity to provide access to new treatments for patients.
He is a member of the South African Stem Cell Transplant Society.

Other Interests: Outside of medicine, in his spare time, he is an enthusiastic amateur astronomer and astrophotographer.
